Chinese mythology stories(3) - Houyi shooting the suns
-
In ancient times, a severe drought plagued the land, scorching the forest, drying the earth, and withering the plants and grasses. It was known that Emperor Jun and Xi He had ten children who were all suns, residing in the East overseas. In the sea stood a great tree called Fusao, under which the ten suns would rest before taking turns to illuminate the sky and earth. However, there were occasions when they would converge and bring calamity upon mankind. To save humanity from this plight, Houyi took aim at nine of the suns with his bow and arrow. The sky then erupted into a fireball as a result of his actions, leading to the descent of a three-legged crow. Ultimately, only one sun remained in the sky; thus earning Houyi praise as a hero by people everywhere.
